Merry Christmas

"And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone around about them; and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, "Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. " Luke 2:10-12

Chess On a Checkerboard

"My work is representational. It is metaphoric. I do not attempt to copy reality, but rather to ‘recreate’ it. I have no interest in sentiment, politics, hidden messages, or illustration in my painting. The painting tells me what to do. It is not the other way around, and it is only about ITSELF. It is only about painting, nothing more." JONI SCULLY (2008) www.joniscullypaintings.com/

edgy and naughty......but nice

Bert Maurits is an artist who's work I find interesting. Sometimes it borders on nasty because of its men's magazine sexual image reference, then at other times it is sensual and alluring as in this example. This is really an intriguing artist. His website is very informative and full of great examples of his pictures.

romantic and free

Some interesting and wonderful art by Joshua Petker. I love the free brushwork and fresh style. He is often considered an edgy street - graffiti-ish artist by the juxtapoz crowd, but I disagree. His girls are sweet and romantic. Check out more at www.joshuapetker.com

Raphael Soyer

Raphael Soyer was a great master artist in the 20th Century. (1899 - November 4, 1987) He lived and worked in New York city and was considered a Social Realist because of his interest in people viewed in contemporary settings. There is not alot of information out there on this guy, and online photos of his works are rare. Hopefully a book of his life works will be published someday soon. I know that I would buy it!

A tragic love....This portrait is of Jeanne Hebuterne. She was the wife and muse of the artist Amedeo Modigliani, who painted in Paris at the begininging of the 20th century. Modigliani dies at the age of 35. Jeanne then commits suicide by jumping out of a fifth floor window killing both her and her unborn child.

Venus of Willendorf

This small sculpture of a robust female figure is from the Paleolithic era. Ancient artists created many such statuettes. It amazes me to think that this is so old. She is thought to be a a symbol of fertility.

Matisse (my all time favorite)

I thought that I would begin my posts with a couple of paintings by my all time favorite artist, Henri Matisse.
Models at Rest 1928

Look at this wonderful painting. This woman is wearing cute house shoes. Probably because the tile floor is cold. I also like the way that Matisse left the girls face blank. The color and simple drawing is beautiful.
